What is the Charity Energy Affordability Program (CHEAP)?
CHEAP is a province-wide energy program created by Sponsor Energy specifically for registered charities and not-for-profit organizations in Alberta. The program provides access to reduced electricity pricing to help organizations lower operating costs and redirect more funding toward their core mission.
Why did Sponsor Energy create CHEAP?
Sponsor Energy has supported Alberta communities for over 12 years and has contributed more than $1 million to nonprofit organizations. CHEAP was created to provide a practical, ongoing way to reduce one of the largest operating expenses nonprofits face—energy—so more resources stay focused on community impact.
How does Sponsor Energy offer reduced non-profit pricing?
CHEAP was developed through a unique partnership between Sponsor Energy and one of Canada’s largest energy producers. By leveraging large-scale buying power, Sponsor Energy is able to secure preferential pricing and extend those savings directly to non-profit organizations.
Who is eligible to participate in CHEAP?
Any registered charity or not-for-profit organization operating in Alberta is eligible to participate. Eligibility is confirmed during the enrollment process.
What energy services are available under CHEAP?
CHEAP currently offers discounted rates for electricity and natural gas.
How much can our organization save per kWh and Gj?
Electricity and Natural Gas pricing outcomes depend on usage, market conditions, contract type, and regulated transmission, distribution, and retailer charges, which are set by third parties and not controlled by Sponsor Energy.
Is CHEAP a fixed-term contract?
Contract structure varies based on market conditions and organizational needs. Sponsor Energy will review fixed-price and other available options and clearly outline term length, pricing, and conditions before any agreement is signed.
Are there any upfront costs or fees to join CHEAP?
No. There are no upfront fees. You can apply online or request our assistance.
Will switching to Sponsor Energy affect service reliability?
No. Sponsor Energy is a licensed energy retailer in Alberta. Your electricity continues to be delivered through the same local utility infrastructure. There is no interruption to service when enrolling.
